New Luanda Military Hospital
Luanda, Luanda Province, Angola
In 2004, Angola began a process of rebuilding and improving its healthcare sector in response to a growing Angolan population and economy. In 2019 the government approved an expansion of services, including access to healthcare, to all veterans, active service members, and their families. The New Luanda Military Hospital will serve as a necessary and welcoming institution for all incomes, ranks, and healthcare concerns in the Angolan Armed Forces community.
The New Luanda Military Hospital is organized around a central courtyard that improves circulation throughout the campus. Because each department of the Hospital plans to expand in the future, the courtyard accommodates spaces for future growth. In future phases, adjoining courtyards will allow the larger buildings to maintain access to landscape, light, and fresh air, and will provide looped connections across departments.
The hospital is located on a greenfield site holding numerous Baobab trees. The Baobab holds significant symbolic and cultural meaning in Africa, and is a protected species within Luanda. The design of the hospital is inspired by the unique growth of the tree, fusing different trunks together into a singular form.
