Cam Bailey believes that the natural world must flourish for humans to thrive. He champions nature-inspired design and sustainable construction practices and finds purpose in collaborating with partners who are dedicated to wildlife conservation.
As the Director of Structural Engineering at MASS Design Group, Cam guides the structural engineering team and plays a key role in business development for the broader engineering department. He contributes to almost every project in the Africa Studio, including a number that align with his passion for conservation such as the Ellen DeGeneres Campus for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (Kinigi, Rwanda), Grumeti RISE (Western Serengeti, Tanzania), and the Reteti Elephant Orphanage Education Centre (Samburu, Kenya). He is currently leading structural design of Grafanil Hospital (Luanda, Angola) and the Lagos Infectious Disease Research Centre (Lagos, Nigeria).
Cam recently partnered with SKAT Consulting to develop open-source design tools for seismic resilient affordable housing in Rwanda, Burundi, and DRC.
Prior to joining MASS, Cam worked at Structure Workshop (London, UK), where he led the design of multiple award-winning projects, such as the new Homerton College Dining Hall in Cambridge, which was awarded Best Education & Public Building, Best Structural Timber, and Overall Gold Winner at the 2022 Wood Awards. He has worked on large-scale public artwork, including the monumental Paradigm sculpture by Conrad Shawcross (London, UK).
Cam graduated with First-Class Honors from the University of Leeds with a Master of Architectural Engineering. He has been a Chartered Member of the Institute of Structural Engineers (UK) since 2014 and became a Corporate Engineer with the Institute of Engineers Rwanda in 2019.
