Research Fellow

Position Overview
MASS Africa Studio is seeking a dedicated research fellow to support the Impact Evaluation initiative funded by the McPike-Zima Foundation. The research fellow will help advance MASS’s research initiatives in three key focus areas: Mother & Child Health, Conservation & Communities, and Learning & Entrepreneurship. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of architecture, design, and impact-driven research, contributing to the implementation of the studio’s strategy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Research Refinement and Development
- Collaborating with focus area leads to refine and enhance research methodologies that align with the studio's 3 focus areas: Mothers and Children, Conservation and Communities, and Learning and Entrepreneurship.
- Conduct comprehensive literature reviews, field studies, and data analysis to generate insights that inform the studio’s research work.
- Produce high-quality research materials, including reports, case studies, publications, and presentations, to effectively communicate findings.
Grant Development and Support
- Identify and research grant opportunities that align with the specified focus areas.
- Assist in drafting and submitting compelling grant applications to secure research funding..
Innovation and Strategy
- Identify gaps and opportunities for innovation within the focus areas.
- Support the development of pilot programs and prototypes based on research insights.
Capacity Building
- Design and deliver tailored capacity-building sessions for focus area leads, enhancing their research capabilities and understanding of advanced methodologies.
- Facilitate workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions to strengthen the team’s collective expertise.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Must be pursuing or have completed a PhD in a relevant field such as public health, architecture, environmental studies, social sciences, or related disciplines.
Experience and Skills:
- Strong research skills, including designing methodologies and conducting qualitative and quantitative research.
- Demonstrated ability to write high-quality research papers, reports, or grant applications.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills for engaging diverse audiences.
- Experience with capacity building or delivering training programs is a plus.
- Proficiency in research tools and platforms, including Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis software.
Other Requirements:
- MUST be willing to reside in Rwanda for the duration of the fellowship.
- Flexibility to travel for fieldwork, stakeholder meetings, and events.
- Familiarity with the intersections of health, conservation, community development, and education in Africa is an advantage.

Work Environment:
This position requires the employee to be based in a MASS Kigali office 3 days a week, with the possibility of 2 remote workdays each week, subject to prior approval from the manager. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in an open office environment with a moderate flow of people passing through the space.
This position requires the candidate to reside in Kigali, Rwanda. Relocation assistance may be provided. MASS will help the selected candidate obtain a work permit in Rwanda if necessary.
