Kelly Alvarez Doran, OAA, MRAIC

Senior Director, Sustainability and Regenerative Design

Kelly joined MASS in 2014 to lead MASS' Kigali office, overseeing the growth of the practice from a team of 8 to 80 over a five-year period. He led the design and implementation of several of MASS’s projects across East Africa, notably the award-winning Munini District Hospital and Rwanda Ministry of Health’s Typical Hospital Plans; Nyarugenge District Hospital, headquarters for both One Acre Fund and Andela in Kenya; and the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture.

As Senior Director of Sustainability and Regenerative Design, Kelly supports Principals and Designers to embed performance & provenance objectives into all MASS projects, as well leading climate-focused research and the training of our entire team.

Kelly holds professorships at The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and at the University of Toronto where his Ha/f Research Studio is focused on the whole life carbon of the built environment. The outcomes of this research informed the development of embodied carbon policy regulation with the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

Prior to joining MASS, Kelly has worked with White Arkitekter as Project Architect of the new Cambridge Children’s Hospital (UK), and with SvN where his work with resource development projects around the world developed a deep appreciation for the complexity and impact of the supply chains of contemporary construction.

Kelly is a past recipient of the Canada Council’s Prix de Rome for Emerging Practitioners, the Irving Grossman Prize for innovation in housing design, and both the AIA and RAIC medals. He has previously held teaching positions at the University of Waterloo, Università Iuav di Venezia, and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.
