2023 Summer Internship - Impact Strategy, Research and Measurement
MASS is currently seeking applications for a summer intern to support our Accompaniment and Impact Team in areas including strategic planning, research, and evaluation.
About MASS
We are a mission-driven design collective that approaches architecture with an interdisciplinary focus on improving people’s lives in measurable ways. Our work has expanded to over a dozen countries in Africa and the Americas with a team whose experience spans Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Furniture/Industrial Design, Engineering, Construction Administration, Graphic Design, Exhibits, Impact Tracking / Measurement, Finance and Accounting, Operations and Administration, Film and Media, Comms and Marketing, and Philanthropy and Advancement.
At MASS we are dedicated to the idea that design can be a force for good in achieving positive social and economic outcomes. We create environments that promote health and human dignity, and design towards a regenerative building culture that advances economic, social, and environmental justice from the scale of a building to the scale of a system.
Our Impact Internship
Our paid internships provide the opportunity to engage with a wide range of projects supporting MASS’s approach to design for impact. Our Accompaniment and Impact Team seeks to support our studios (Boston, Poughkeepsie, Santa Fe, Kigali and our Landscape team) to develop a clear theory of change for their work; supporting our design teams with research that can inform their design outputs for clients; and working with our team and our partners to evaluate the impact of our work on key social and economic indicators.
This summer, we seek an intern to support the following scopes of work:
- Impact Strategy
- Supporting the team in designing workshops to develop impact strategies and theories of change for each of our studios
- Conducting secondary and market research to undergird each strategy as it is developed to ensure our visions are research-driven, market-aligned, and realistic.
- Compiling strategies in multiple formats (short Word documents and slide decks) that can articulate our impact goals to varied internal and external audiences
- Data Collection
- Supporting the team in finalizing the key metrics that MASS will track across all projects and studios to assess our impact
- Working across studios to assign roles and responsibilities for collecting and analyzing our impact data on an ongoing basis
- Working with our technology teams to vet possible database solutions for tracking these metrics over time, including integration with existing platforms used across the organization
- Laying the groundwork for the publication of a new annual report by year-end
- Impact Research
- Building an internal library of research literature and resources that connect the design of the built environment (e.g. architecture, landscape, and urban planning interventions) to MASS’s key impact targets
- Developing slides or one-pagers of this research that design teams can use when pitching or describing their work to current or prospective clients
Together, this work will help MASS to become an even more impact-driven organization. Your contributions will help to ensure we are delivering as much social good as we can in each of the communities we serve. And your work will inform organizational practice for at least the next three to five years.
Qualifications
Although we welcome applicants from all educational levels, our internships are geared towards applicants who are currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from undergraduate or graduate degree programs. For this post, we are especially interested in candidates who may have experience with strategy, consulting, and data analysis. We imagine these candidates may come from, but are by no means limited to, degree programs in business, economics, social enterprise or other social sciences. Comfort with the Adobe Suite is a plus.
Interns should be prepared to relocate for in-person work in Boston. Please note that for applicants to our US office locations, MASS is unable to provide visa sponsorship for our summer internships.
With over 200 employees from almost a dozen countries, MASS lives our belief that only a diverse staff from widely varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is properly equipped to tackle complex challenges in our communities. We aspire to create a more inclusive architecture profession and encourage all qualified individuals to apply.
Timeline
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. You will be contacted by April 7th, 2023 if selected for an interview. Interested candidates should submit all application materials through the SlideRoom portal before March 19th, 2023. We regret that we are unable to accept applications submitted via email or physical mail.
